Welcome!

Welcome to Living in the Past, the "Ortburg" family blog.  We are the descendants of families named Ortman and Berneburg, all branches of which have their origins in Germany.  Although Germany is a notoriously difficult place to do genealogical research, in the past few years I've had enough success that I wanted a place to share discoveries and memories with my far-flung family.  I intend to convey  not only the joys but the frustrations as well, the processes and the ways that my skills are improving.

I'm also dipping into genetic genealogy and though I still have a lot to learn, I'm enjoying making discoveries about our recent and ancient history.

I hope you enjoy the blog! Let me know what you think --

  1. Thank you for writing this blog. We go to Paris next week from Australia and were a little concerned about the security situation, but reading your posts has reassured me a great deal that life is getting back to normal in Paris.
